Although the vagaries of entertainment accounting have become legendary, it is universally acknowledged that the U.S. adult-film industry, at around $12 billion in annual sales, rentals, and cable charges in 2006, is an even grander and more efficient moneymaking machine than legitimate mainstream American cinema (the latter's annual gross came in at $9 billion for 2006).
During this year's AVN Awards — AVN (or the Adult Video News) is a glossy magazine that's basically the Variety of the U.S. porn industry — the media network released its annual survey of the U.S. adult entertainment industry.
The figures were impressive. Total revenue for 2006 came in at an astounding $12.92 billion. Overall, delivery costs were down for the year, according to AVN, a fact that supposedly accounted for the industry's continued growth.
On the video side of things, while the adult industry saw a significant decrease (15 percent) in sales and rentals last year, the sector managed to remain the largest (28 percent) in the adult entertainment market, accounting for $3.6 billion in 2006 — this, despite increasing competition from alleged Internet-based methods of pornographic distribution.
And with video sales remaining the industry's main breadwinner, it was only a matter of time before the first high-definition adult film made its way to the public. The industry, not so surprisingly, chose HD DVD.
Like with a 108-inch LCD television, it wasn't really about practicality as much as it was being first to market — and finding a cheap way of doing so.
In December of last year, Wicked Pictures released the industry's first HD DVD title, "Camp Cuddly Pines Power Tool Massacre."
Vice President of DVD Production, Jackie Ramos, characterized it as a movie about people having sex ... and then getting killed.
"Camp Cuddly" also happened to be one of Wicked's more popular titles (it had already seen a DVD release earlier in the year) and the company felt there would be continued demand for the movie in glossier high-definition iteration.
7 fantasy final The year was 1922. F. Scott Fitzgerald spun tales of beautiful flappers and dashing aristocrats. Crowds danced to the hot licks of cool jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong. Secret Speakeasies and backyard stills sprung up in the wake of Prohibition. Women swooned at the images of Rudolph Valentino and Douglas Fairbanks on the silver screen. The discovery of King Tut’s tomb gave the public a glimpse of the awesome riches of ancient Egypt.
In Rhode Island, the opening of the Providence Biltmore Hotel epitomized this year of glitter and glamour. A front-page story in the June 6, 1922 edition of the Providence Journal reported on the banquet and ball that would officially open the Biltmore, predicting that it would be “the most elaborate social event ever to be held in the city.” Over 1,000 people attended the party, including local officials and several prominent New York City hoteliers. For the occasion, the building was illuminated from top to bottom with more than 25,000 lights.
The original owners, New York entrepreneurs John Bowman and Louis Wallick, envisioned the Biltmore as a state-of-the-art luxury hotel. It was designed by New York architects Warren and Wetmore, whose other commissions included Grand Central Station. The building’s unique V-shaped design afforded all guests an outside room.
simpson Critics of the law argued that filters work best because they let parents set limits based on their own values and their child's age.
The law addressed material accessed by children under 17, but applied only to content hosted in the United States. The Web sites that challenged the law said fear of prosecution might lead them to shut down or move their operations offshore, beyond the reach of the U.S. law. They also said the Justice Department could do more to enforce obscenity laws already on the books.
The 1998 law followed Congress' unsuccessful 1996 effort to ban online pornography. The Supreme Court in 1997 deemed key portions of that law unconstitutional because it was too vague and trampled on adults' rights.
The newer law narrowed the restrictions to commercial Web sites and defined indecency more specifically. In 2000, Congress passed a law requiring schools and libraries to use software filters if they receive certain federal funds. The high court upheld that law in 2003.

black spider man And if shopping to save the planet is trendy, having sex to clear your conscience is at the cutting edge.
"It feels like people are just waking up to the fact the planet is suffering under our uses of it," says Rebecca Denk, business manager for the adult toy store Babeland. The U.S. company, which sells to Canadians via Babeland.com, just introduced an "Eco-Sexy Kit" featuring a phthalate-free vibrator, soy massage candle, a natural lubricant with no animal-testing or derivatives, and condoms.
"We have to look at every piece of our lives, including our sexuality, and ask: How is this healthy for me, and how is this healthy for the planet?" says Denk. "Hopefully, we're all becoming better global citizens."
Other ways of "greenwashing" the bedroom, as outlined by TreeHugger and Greenpeace, include turning out the lights, not buying PVC or vinyl accoutrements, ensuring S&M paddles are made from sustainably harvested timber, using organic massage oils, showering together, using bamboo bed sheets (they come from a rapidly renewable resource and are said to be "super sexy"), and wearing lingerie made with renewable fibres such as hemp (Enamore), bamboo (Butta) and other organic goodness (GreenKnickers, Buenostyle, Peau Ethique). |
